DDLM Day of the Dead Cake Toppers

There isn't much I'd rather do than make Day of the Dead cake toppers for my clients.  I get emails full of people, pets, dresses, bouquets, hairstyles, and veils, all to be recreated in the skeletal form.

I am usually doing this in August and September for the upcoming Halloween and Dia de los Muertos weddings.  I have had a long time fascination with those who choose to have dead replicas of themselves as their wedding cake topper.  Is there an element of tempting fate?  Is it a statement that even death can't separate them?  Whatever they are thinking, I love the quirky unique style of a couple with customized skeletons atop their wedding cake!  Here is a tribute to those beloved clients who have trusted me to create their toppers:

Man Eating Frog Sculpture

I have an obsession with frogs.  I have loved them since I was a child when I would catch unsuspecting tadpoles and stalk full grown frogs in the wetlands.

They taught me to meditate as I would become completely still, blending in with the tall grass, breathing in unison with the earth below my feet.  Gradually a whole tiny dimension of insects, water creatures, and otherwise unseen tiny creepy crawlies would reveal itself to my eyes, and I was in heaven!  It was then that I was able to pounce on my prey.  I always released then unscathed, but sometimes I would walk out of the marshy water with leeches attached to my ankles and feet...yuck!

So in the spirit of my childhood I decided to make a creepy man eating frog sculpture.

"On the remote island of GrotenRa scientists have discovered a giant man eating frog. This frog has the unique ability to swallow a human whole, in one gulp. The frog will then digest the human’s body, however the human’s head and brain is left intact and continues to function inside the frog. The man inside the frog can apparently live for 200 years in this frogified state. It is unknown what effect this has on the human brain. Does the human begin to think for the frog, or does it desire to be free of its captor? "

5" long (head to rump)
4" wide
3" high

This one is for sale in my Etsy shop:

Nature Walk

 Photo ©SpiritMama
I had the most beautiful walk last evening.

I started out walking on the trail at dusk with 3 Monarch butterflies flying around and above me.

I  looked to my left, where a large doe had just crossed my path.  I watched as her fluffy white tail bounced playfully up and down among the brush.  I had the feeling that she was there for me, calling me to appreciate and glide deeper into my awareness of the moment.

I walked on as the sun was setting and I awakened to a chorus of thousands of frogs and crickets serenading me.  I felt prickly sensations on my skin as the music of the wetlands grew louder and enveloped me as if I was in a cocoon of sound.

I jumped when I suddenly heard loud rattling like dozens of tiny tambourines at a drum circle. The sun was now set but there was enough light for me to look up and see that a breeze was shaking the leaves of a large tree and for an instant it seemed that I could see each individual leaf as it danced and sang just for me.  The song stopped just as quickly as it had begun and I walked on.

The quiet breeze felt a little warm and a little cool, it was the perfect temperature and I felt as though I was a fish swimming in a gentle stream.

There was no one else on the trail, yet it was alive with the energy of a new night, and as I arrived back home a little toad hopped out of the grass in front of me.  I picked him up gently, feeling his soft cool skin in my palm.  I looked him in the eye and he looked at me.  We shared an exchange of reverence for an eternal, brief moment, and I ever so delicately placed him back where I had picked him up.

Ahhh, the magic of fall is in the air, and good things are afoot.

VW Van Sock Monkey Cake Topper

I just finished this custom made wedding cake topper with a bride and groom on VW Van with a dachshund and guitar. I used their wedding date as the license plate number.

It was so fun and they look so happy! I think I will add this style as a regular shop listing.

I always give the monkeys heart shaped tails in back.

Happy New Year!

I'm so excited about 2012 and the wonderful things to come!!! This year is sure to bring adventure and loads of creativity.
I added so many new styles of cake toppers to my shop in 2011, and I know there will be many more unique sculptures coming this year.

I have also started painting again.  I was so inspired to paint during the week after Christmas that I completed two paintings in one week!  That is a record for me.  I'll post soon with pictures of my paintings!

Happy New Year, may you be blessed with your deepest heart's desires in 2012!
