"Ix Chel" Mayan Divine Mother Goddess Guide Sculpture

I have completed another "guide" sculpture. This is Ix Chel, or Ixchel.  She is a Mayan goddess, revered as Divine Mother and she is also known as the moon goddess.  Ix Chel started showing up in my meditations a few months ago.  She has been contributing to my healing sessions regularly and I decided to sculpt her the way I see her with blue skin and in the "mother" aspect, rather than the maiden or crone.  She is dynamic, loving, beautiful, and always moving.  She is wise, powerful and an amazing healer.  I am blessed to know her energy.

About Ixchel

Ixchel is the ancient Maya goddess of fertility & healing. Ix means goddess of the feminine. Chel means rainbow or light. Ix Chel is known as Goddess of the Rainbow and Lady of Sacred Light. She is associated with bodies of water, lakes, streams, rivers and creeks.  As the Maya moon goddess, sometimes called "Lady Rainbow", she wears a serpent on her head . The snake is associated with  Kundalini energy, medicine, healing powers and intuitive forces. She is the goddess of fertility, motherhood , the moon and menstrual cycle. She is mother of all.  As the Crone she is in charge of medicinal plants, healing and the moon phases. Toy Story Character Sculptures #2

Here are a few more Toy Story inspired sculptures I've done over the last 18 months.

Trixie, Bonnie's dinosaur toy-
Trixie was my most time consuming Toy Story project, and definitely the largest.  This was by far the most difficult replica I've done.  She is over 16.5" long and it took me 60+ hours to complete.

The Robot:
 I made two of these, and they took about 40 hours each. They are 9.5" tall.  The robot has so many details that were challenging, yet the result is really fun.

 Now I need to show you the snake, because Robot and Snake are best buddies and they are almost always seen together in the Toy Story movies.


Snake is pretty fun to make.  I have made several snake replicas, they are jointed and each section moves.

Toy Story Inspired Character Sculptures

I have had a group of Toy Story collectors asking me to make 3-D reproductions of various Toy Story characters over the last 18 months.  Making 3-D reproductions of computer animated toys is not my favorite thing to do, but I have continued to do it because these collectors are VERY persistent and some of the characters are a lot of fun.  They have all posed challenges, and some were not fun at all to sculpt. All of them take a lot of time (usually way more time than I expected). Overall I think I am a better artist now because of this work, and ultimately that is the most valuable thing I have received from doing these sculptures.  Here are a few of the Toy Story characters I've reproduced:

Bo Peep's 3 Headed Sheep-
This is one of my favorites.  I just love the character of the sheep's faces.

Little Bo Peep- She was one of my most difficult sculptures.  Everything is so detailed on her, and I was SO HAPPY the day she was finished!

Chuckles the Clown-  This one was actually pretty fun.  He has a soft body with sculpted head, hands and feet.  I love sculpting clowns.

Hockey Puck-  This is an obscure character from the first Toy Story movie.

Kama, Fire Dragon Goddess

Guide Sculpture "KAMA"

I want to share my latest sculpture.  Her name is "Kama" and she is a Fire Dragon Goddess who comes around to stir things up and get things moving.
I first saw her while doing intuitive work with a friend and client, and Kama came through as such a strong guide for my friend that I could not stop thinking about her.  She is so dynamic, sometimes I see her riding a dragon or even morphing into a fire-breathing dragon.Kama is a dancer, a fire-spirit, and mover of energy.

 Kama is a OOAK (one of a kind) art doll mixed media sculpture.  Her head, bust, arms and hands are made of polymer clay.

 Her gown is made of various fabrics including vintage silk, a printed Thai cotton, velvet, and tulle.  I used wire and fabric starch to create the spiraling, undulating textures of her firey gown.  

 Her black hair is made of lambs wool, and I used colored feathers in her head dress.

 Her wings have a 14" wing span and they are made of Fantasy Film.  They are dynamically iridescent and look different colors in different types of light.

Kama was so much fun to create, I am looking forward to creating a series of goddesses and guides this year.

I Love October!

October is one of my favorite months!  I love how the leaves change color, the air crispens up, pumpkin patches open and Halloween is on the horizon. 

Here is what I've been up to this month:

The whole family went to Poppe's Pumpkin Patch in Lakefield, MN last weekend.  It was beautiful and the kids had so much fun running around, picking pumpkins, playing with the goats, and they even have a corn maze!

Here are some cake toppers I've made this month:

 This is a Christmas ornament with a child.  It can be modified to have another child, or only one adult.

Day of the Dead Art "Viva La Vida"

I have so much fun making Day of the Dead sculptures, so I decided to try a framed relief sculpture.

 

"Viva La Vida" is a relief portrait of a skeleton couple in celebration of "Dia de los Muertos", or "Day of the Dead". It can be hung all year or just saved for that special time of year. 

 "Viva La Vida" means 'Live Life' or 'Live The Life', and is an expression used to celebrate life.

 If your space is craving a little color, this framed art piece will spice it up! It is a 5x7 frame, which measures 6.5" x 8.5" total. The characters are sculpted from polymer clay. The frame is turquoise and from Ikea.

A Few of My Latest Cake Toppers

 

 

Free Tip for Craft Show Vendors

 

If you are an artist, like me, and if you take your work to shows, like I do, I have a great tip for you!

You know those parents who bring their kids to the show and let them run free, grabbing and poking at whatever they like while Mom and Dad chat and browse?  Yeah, I bet you know them all too well!

At my last show I came up with a brilliant solution to the art-molestation problem.  I took a cute little vintage frog cup I had found at an antique shop.  I filled it up with dum-dums (little suckers) and I topped it off with two little sock monkey cupcake toppers which peeked out over the dum-dums.

I placed the frog and it's child-enticing contents next to my checkout area (just out of the reach of children), and each time a grabby child visited my booth I offered a dum-dum.  Now the child has a treat, AND she has to hold on to it with one hand.  This usually solved the problem 100%, however in one or two especially grabby cases I offered TWO dum-dums, one for each hand, and that did the trick.

I realize some parents might not like their children to be offered candy, I'm one of them, but if  parents can't keep their children's hands busy...I will!
